« Vins de Pays d’Oc » have been the leading French Vin de Pays for the last 20 years and have propelled the the Languedoc Roussillon wine region into the international market. Covering the region’s four wine-growing departments (Gard, Hérault, Aude and Pyrénées Orientales), they stretch from the River Rhone to the Pyrenees. Core production is made up of six main grape varieties: Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet-Sauvignon for the reds, and Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Viognier for the whites. The region is vast, allowing Vins de Pays d’Oc to offer great diversity that’s always in line with its quality policy. Today, Vins de Pays d’Oc are France’s leading exporters with 2.3 million hectolitres exported. They are also the uncontested leaders in the varietal market in France and in Europe in the supermarkets and the traditional sales circuits (private wine shops and the hotel/restaurant trade). With Vins de Pays d’Oc and their 4.8 million hectolitres produced every year, you can’t deny the dynamism and economic strength of the Languedoc Roussillon winegrowers.

In 1990, in recognition of the Béziers winegrowers’ determination and their tremendous attachment to their « terroir », the « Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée » institution gave them a favourable report: Béziers became « AOC Coteaux du Languedoc ». Since then, much ground has been covered and there has been success along the way, as the many awards show. Since 2000, the same winegrowers have stubbornly continued their long march towards quality. Convinced that wine should be above all the expression of a ‘terroir’ and that Béziers has a magnificent terroir, they have worked for its recognition within the Coteaux du Languedoc hierarchy. Hence the birth of ‘Terrasses de Béziers’, an outstanding terroir set out like an amphitheatre around Béziers. Here you’ll find the red earth of Cazouls-lès-Béziers, the clay and limestone of Murviel-lès-Béziers, the pinewoods and steep cliffs of Nissan-lez-Ensérune and the rolled pebble gravel of Béziers, Sauvian, Sérignan and the Vendres plateau.

The Thongue is a small Languedoc river that runs peacefully through the foothills of the Cévennes to the Mediterranean. Over time it has formed the hillsides on which the vines gain the full benefit of the Mediterranean climate. To pay tribute to the quality of the soils it has produced, the winegrowers decided to name the best part of their production: Vin de Pays des Côtes de Thongue, whose vineyards stretch out to the west of Pézenas (Puissalicon, Espondeilhan, Abeilhan and Servian...)
The Côtes de Thongue syndicate was formed in 1974 to manage and defend the name of the « terroirs » that it represents. Today, progress towards quality continues and every day adds to the history of this notable appellation, with its characterful wines and forward-looking attitude. The Côtes de Thongue wine region extends over 1,800 ha and includes 60 winegrowers. It produces 100,000 hl (i.e. 65,000 hl of red wine, 15,000 hl of rosé and 20,000 hl of white wine).

Like the river Thongue, the Libron, a capricious river known for its legendary flooding, has fashioned the hillsides where the vineyards grow. The Vins de Pays des Coteaux du Libron Syndicate was founded in 1974. It marks out the production area across the communes of Bassan, Béziers, Boujan-sur-Libron, Cers, Corneilhan, Lieuran-lès-Béziers, Portiragnes, Sauvian, Sérignan, Valras-Plage, Vendres, Villeneuve-lès-Béziers and Vias, and organises technical production procedures.
The winegrowers have adapted these vineyards to produce wines of character to suit consumer tastes. Today the Vins de Pays des Coteaux du Libron are positioned as Béziers wines with criteria that cover origin, ‘terroir’ and strong identity. The Coteaux du Libron wine region extends over 9,000 ha and includes 7 cooperative wineries and 20 private winegrowers, producing 35,000 hl.

Two wine estates offer organic wines: « Domaine d'Émile et Rose » in Corneilhan, and « Domaine André Bourguet » in Béziers. You’ll be surprised by their authentic, high-quality wines.
